Far too often as Christians we think our main goal in life is perfect church attendance. We miss the larger calling and ability of the mission God actually set out in the Bible. One thing I love to think about is our ability as people in the workplace to change the course of tide of life itself. This is introduced biblically as…

Have you ever been so annoyed with someone on a soapbox that you would give up your friendship with them?
Leave a CommentI see this topic of “faith at work” floating around sometimes nowadays, much more often then I did ten years ago, and I think it’s a wonderful topic. However, it’s always interesting how this discussion actually goes after the title. I think far too often, people are confusing their vocabulary, so let’s discuss some things it’s not. It’s not called “Faith and Work”. If…
Leave a CommentI remember one patient livid at me- exclaiming in spite of the awful pain she was having in her knee, there was no way she could take a break from running 25 miles every day! I just looked back at her in exasperation, not knowing what else to say. If our bodies are experts at breaking down the old, resting, and then rebuilding, why aren’t we?
1 CommentGo and find what it is that inspires you, go and find what it is that you love, and go do that until it hurts. Don’t quit, and don’t give up. The reward is just around the corner. 2 CommentsSorry to be such a downer. This movie has gotten a ton of press and awards over the last few weeks. And I totally agree with it- it’s got some great actors, memorable songs, incredible shots and directing, and a surprising plot. But the theme of this movie is actually quite depressing, and I find it hard to believe no one sees that.…
2 CommentsWe burnout often because we filter everything in our lives nowadays- painting over and touching up things that we should have just thrown out and given up on long ago.
1 CommentInitially, burnout was reserved for those in high stress careers. What I’ve noticed recently is that burnout isn’t just for the Type-A overachieving doctors we assume will suffer from it. The more I’ve interacted and worked with friends in ministry the more I realize it’s not just burnout in medicine– burnout affects the artist, the dreamers, and the servants too.…
1 CommentSo everyone has bad days or even bad months at work, how do you know when it’s actually burnout? One author posed it as a continuum of stress– a dichotomy between stress and eventual burnout. You look for signs indicating struggle now, and make changes to head in a different direction in the future. The symptoms of burnout have been defined as exhaustion, cynicism, and inefficiency…
3 CommentsI’m going to dedicate this month to talking about burnout. I have been kicked out of my career once and burned myself out twice so I pretty much consider myself an expert! (Though I don’t know that that’s really something to brag about.) This time of year for me personally has always been the worst, so I figured it would…
