“Don’t you think we’re being hard on King David? He did a lot of incredible things, being a little bit disappointed in himself for messing up is no big deal. We all do that!” “We definitely do. But I think David’s biggest failure is not that he messed up. His biggest failure is decades later he was still expecting repercussions…

I have been on the outskirts of several outreaches where churches banned certain music, discredited our current movie culture, or burned books. And I while I understand it entirely, I also find it impossible to live by. I think the main goal of each of these movements was to take something that was a clear idol in the culture and try to get Christians not fall under that same spell by avoiding it completely. In actuality, it just makes me unaware of the problems in the culture I live in, pushing away the glimpses of beauty and promise that are there, and avoiding the very people I was meant to serve and love.

Leave a CommentSorry to be such a downer. This movie has gotten a ton of press and awards over the last few weeks. And I totally agree with it- it’s got some great actors, memorable songs, incredible shots and directing, and a surprising plot. But the theme of this movie is actually quite depressing, and I find it hard to believe no one sees that.…
2 CommentsHallelujah should not be a forced manipulation that tricks you into pretending- it’s a wholehearted surrender to trusting someone other than yourself. And where the song meets Christmas is in realizing that this is where Jesus’ very life began.
Leave a CommentThe little drummer boy is one of the songs commonly thought of as a Christmas classic and has been featured on countless Christmas albums since it was written in 1941. But though I love the song, I must be honest, growing up I never had a clue what the song was about. Oh, it’s Christmastime again, yes let’s sing about…
Leave a CommentI’ve lead a Bible study for almost a decade and one thing that comes up very frequently is does God still talk to people? Like literally tell people things and answer what they ask for? Does He really even care about the things we ask him for? Or are we all just sitting around going through steps, begging for an…
Leave a CommentHello. Can you hear me? Can you hear me now? This Grammy award winning song by Adele has had monstrous success- and amazingly has been the source of more skits, covers, articles, and parodies then seemingly possible. Obviously, it’s a very catchy song. A friend remarked to me that Adele said the song was actually about her own self-discovery, not about a relationship. I…
Leave a CommentI am sure many feel my blog is very strange. I’m not totally sure I always get it myself to be perfectly honest with you, but let me try to explain why I do it. I look at music, and movies, and the marketplace and I try to see more than what is being obviously stated. I try to see in between the…
1 CommentThe problem is not that we don’t have enough knowledge of what’s happening in the world, far too often the problem is that we have completely lost the definition of love. We act like love is a feeling that can be switched on, changed, and demanded. True love is refusing to give up on those who don’t always care, don’t understand, and don’t always love you back.
