“This happens every single time she gets a runny nose. It gets really bad, and doesn’t go away for weeks and she needs antibiotics. It happens every time, no matter what.” I sigh and bite my tongue. Because of the way this mom is talking I know exactly how this appointment will end- with her yelling at me that she’s…

When life gets hard, and it will, it’s hard to remember the good things. But it’s very hard to dig through a firm foundation.
1 CommentI watched an awesome documentary about Mr. Rogers, Won’t you be my neighbor, a few weeks ago and was struck by how unique his life was. He initially wanted to become a minister, and went to school for it. However, instead of working full time in ministry, he took a job working to create a children’s television program that would…
Leave a Comment“Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. As you do not know the path of wind… so you cannot understand the work of God, the maker of all things.” Ecclesiastes 11:4-5 I was reading Ecclesiastes a few weeks ago and was struck by this passage. The entire book is such a…
2 Comments“So, it all began as wide-eyed pure science. And then the ego steps in. Obsession. You look up, and you’re a long way from the shore.” One of the things that can make people fear success is the ego on the other side of it. From a Christians perspective, we neither want to be lazy, nor work obsessed. We neither…
2 CommentsBut honestly, serving God is not about being famous. It’s about the tiny steps and small decisions that we make each day that hopefully take us closer and closer to God. Recognition can become a drug that wedges in between our relationship with him and makes our entire life about working hard enough to force note-worthy awesomeness.
1 CommentThe young boy at the cash register looked annoyed but managed an angry and lackadaisical, “What do you want?” A room full of people sat nearby, trying not to lose their cool. This was one of my favorite places in town to get chicken. Usually. Today there was evidently not a manager on duty. And the four teens left in…
Leave a CommentI have been on the outskirts of several outreaches where churches banned certain music, discredited our current movie culture, or burned books. And I while I understand it entirely, I also find it impossible to live by. I think the main goal of each of these movements was to take something that was a clear idol in the culture and try to get Christians not fall under that same spell by avoiding it completely. In actuality, it just makes me unaware of the problems in the culture I live in, pushing away the glimpses of beauty and promise that are there, and avoiding the very people I was meant to serve and love.
Leave a Comment“Oh, so you’re going to Vegas? Sin City!?! Well, be careful!!” I just smile and nod every time. But the statement makes me wonder at times. I understand the idea, of course- that when people are surrounded by a lot of temptation, it’s very easy to become someone different and make choices you wouldn’t have otherwise. But really, the statement…
Leave a CommentHomegrown is a unique album that is a combination of music and poetry that speaks to social justice and wrestling with issues in the culture that people are afraid to speak about. Janisha wanted to combine her roots as a person- a black, Christian woman growing up in St. Louis- coupled with issues in our generation that are far to often not discussed at all. “I wanted to give young black Christians a voice because they haven’t had one.”
